What would happen if, when your spouse arrived home from work (or emerged from the home office), the entire family shouted, “Welcome!” followed by cheering and a big round of hugs? They would certainly remember it!
When I joined IBM I was greeted enthusiastically at the door by my buddy, Tracey D. She made sure I knew where to go on day one, introduced me to the team, and acted as my guide through the first 30 days. I was in very good hands and merged seamlessly with the team. That experience left a lasting impression on my life.
I watched a documentary on the band Genesis, founded way back in 1967, fronted by Peter Gabriel (yes, the Sledgehammer guy). Phil Collins joined the band in 1970 – just 3 years later – taking over vocals when Gabriel left. In a recent documentary I was struck by Collins’ comment that he ‘never truly felt part of the band.’
How can that be after millions of records sold? I’m sure it reflects issues on both sides of the band, but could a warmer welcome have made a difference? Perhaps.
When I work with organizations on improving culture, one of my favorite targets is the onboarding program. Rolling out the red carpet (literally, if possible!) with an ‘over-the-top’ welcome can inspire greater energy, performance, and commitment. What organization doesn’t need more of that?
So, my question for you is, how do you greet new members of the team? Can we get some fireworks in here?? It’s an investment in your culture.
Thoughtfully yours,
Jeff Skipper
