How to Touch Someone Without Touching Someone

Human contact was already pretty much taboo in the workplace, but with COVID it feels like hugs are a luxury out of reach for those of us working from our homes.

But touch is still important. In fact, it’s been proven critical for the developing child and the mental health of adults.

In one of my forays into the cloud I came across the “Long Distance Friendship Lamp”. You buy enough lamps for yourself and your friends. Send them to people around the world – the lamps are networked through WIFI. When anyone touches the lamp, it not only produces a beautiful glow for you, but ignites all of the others.

I have to admit – I thought this was a cheesy idea. Then I saw the reviews and read the comments. People love it! Sitting and working away by myself, I admit it would be very cool to see a lamp glow to life, indicating Joanne was sending me good vibes!

We don’t always want to be seen on a video call. We can be lazy about picking up the phone. But knowing someone is thinking about you right now as your lamp lights up is a beautiful distraction designed to do one thing: lift your spirits. It’s the modern equivalent to someone dropping by your desk just to say ‘hi.’

It reminds me that inspiration is more than words. Impact comes in many forms. There are so many ways to connect with our employees, peers, and friends though we are apart.

If your entire team were part of this light network, how often would they see a glow from you? Reaching out and connecting has never been more important as we work our way through the challenges and triumphs of this strange life.

Use a lamp, chat, or snail-mail. Whichever way you choose, find ways to be present.

Thoughtfully yours, and just in time for Christmas.
